The Ferndale School District is seeking members to serve on our Bell Times Advisory Committee, a group that will study and evaluate possible adjustments to start and end times for Ferndale’s elementary, middle, and high schools.

This advisory will play a key role in analyzing research, operational realities, and community feedback to develop a recommendation for the Superintendent and School Board that best supports student learning, well-being, and family balance.

Why This Work Matters

Community feedback and recommendations from the Family Engagement Advisory have made it clear that school start times are an important factor in student success. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention supports later start times for middle and high school students, noting benefits such as improved attendance, mental health, and academic performance.

Committee Focus Areas

 Members will:

  • Review current bell schedules across all grade levels.

  • Examine research on the developmental, academic, and health impacts of start times.

  • Analyze transportation, staffing, athletics, and financial implications.

  • Gather feedback from students, staff, and families.

  • Develop and recommend feasible schedule models to present to the Superintendent and School Board.

Membership

We are seeking a diverse group of representatives, including:

  • Parents/guardians from across grade levels and schools

  • Students (middle and high school)

  • Teachers and classified staff

  • District and school administrators

  • Community members, including after-school and youth sports partners

Meeting Schedule

  • December 10: Orientation and research review

  • January 15: Feedback and operational considerations

  • February 5: Review of proposed schedule models
